Sir, – Alison Healy outlines various approaches to choosing between candidates at interviews, from assessing how they eat soup to their willingness and approach to sweeping floors (An Irishwoman’s Diary, December 30th). Anyone who’s been involved in shortlisting lengthy lists of applicants may see merit in the strategy of David Brent in The Office. This is to throw half of the applicants CVs in the bin without reading them. It is, of course, a way to “avoid employing unlucky people”. – Yours, etc,
