Sir, – Further to “Frank McNally gets a new angle on the winter solstice at Newgrange” (An Irishman’s Diary, December 21st), nowadays people from all over the world apply for the privilege of being one of the few present to witness the phenomenon at Newgrange. A 1930s photograph (now in the National Archives) shows a large group of people from Carrickmacross happily sitting on the roof of the tomb! On my own first visit there, it was just a matter of obtaining the key from the local farmer. – Yours, etc,
MARION WALSH,
Dublin 4.
