Sir, – I taught in a junior school for over 25 years. At this time of year, the staff made a collective decision to avoid displaying anything to do with Christmas until the first week in December.
The main reason was the huge distraction this festive occasion has for the very young child.
The winter term is key in the school year, it is usually the longest term and many are adjusting to formal school life for the first time and all are being taught to use their wonderful open minds to learn about the magic of autumn and the magnificent change in the natural world around them.
We cannot change commercialism but we can let common sense rule and avoid the usual palaver until December. – Yours, etc,
