I beg to differ.

Sir, – While training as a chef in a Co Offaly hotel, a senior chef from the locality regularly referred to colcannon or champ as “thump” – a dish of shredded cabbage and scallions gently softened in hot milk and butter, mixed with well-seasoned, coarsely mashed potatoes. – Yours, etc,
