A chara, – Your report on the European Commission’s call to close down turf cutting in special areas of conservation was illustrated with a photograph of two men standing on a bog with shovels (News, September 30th). Most turf cutting is a highly mechanised commercial activity. Large areas of bog are destroyed by diggers, as turf is cut to be exported by the ton.
