Sir, – At weekends, Dublin city plays host to various protests, performances, sports fixtures and other events, bringing large numbers of people into the city centre.
Many of these are planned months in advance, and yet our public transport systems collapse almost entirely as buses and trams are held captive for hours in the city centre. This has a knock-on effect on services right across the network long after the crowds have gone home.
All cross-city routes should be turned around at the canal boundaries, thus providing a limited but reliable service for the many passengers who do not need to travel into the city centre.
Luas is designed to facilitate this but does not appear to take advantage of it.

This system would also allow normal cross-city services to resume quickly, with buses and trams well positioned to do so. – Yours, etc,
