Sir, – The complete dysfunction of the UN Security Council was laid bare this week. The toothless berating of Russia, and the issuing of empty threats, again highlighted that with permanency and associated vetoes in place, the Security Council is a waste of time in its current guise.
The UN needs significant reform, with full democratisation, and proportional representation based on population size, not just economic influence. Membership of the Security Council should be fully rotational, with regional representation. The removal of any vetoes is essential. The UN needs teeth in these uncertain times when global solidarity is vital in the face of the climate and biodiversity crises as well as the increased threat of global conflict. Ireland has an opportunity to provide leadership on this reform and so should step up and grasp it. – Yours, etc,
