Where are you from?

Conversational habits

Sir, – Kathryn Phelan’s feelings about the question are different to mine (“I’m tired of being asked where I am from”, Opinion & Analysis, August 20th). I found it to be a welcoming question initiating a pleasant conversation both in the US and now back in Ireland. One time in the US, when I said I was Irish, I was even complimented on my “good English”.

It still makes me smile. – Yours, etc,

NUALA McCARTHY,

Cork.
