Sir, – Newton Emerson tells us that it would be “appalling negligence” if energy becomes “a cross-border political football” (“Tension and troublemaking inevitable between North and Republic in face of energy shortages”, Opinion & Analysis, August 11th). The reason that possibility occurs derives from the fact that Brexiteers voted to discontinue the cooperation that was involved in common membership of the EU and the reconciliation that was signed up to in the Belfast Agreement. Newton Emerson hopes that cooperation between London and Dublin in relation to this energy crisis will build “some trust and solidarity in the wake of Brexit”.
