A headline on an article last Thursday about presidential candidate Seán Gallagher - “Businessman’s diary supports claim Gallagher collected €5,000 cheque” - was wrong.
As the article made clear, the diary extracts did not provide any evidence to back the allegation that Mr Gallagher collected the cheque, which was a donation to Fianna Fáil.
Yesterday’s opinion article by Fintan O’Toole reported that the Referendum Commission’s role was to produce the definitive arguments in favour of and against referendum proposals. Since the passage of the Referendum Act 2001, the commission’s role has in fact been to publish and distribute a neutral general explanation of the subject matter of referendum proposals, to promote public awareness of the referendum and encourage the electorate to vote.
