Hungarian-born actress Zsa Zsa Gabor is in a coma today after a car accident on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, police said.
Gabor, who is in her mid-eighties, was in serious condition in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said a spokesman at the hospital.
Media reports said Gabor - renowned for her long list of husbands as much as her films - suffered head injuries and multiple fractures. But the hospital would not comment on her injuries.
"She was the single passenger in the car. She was in the passenger seat, up front. There was a driver," said a police spokesman. He said the car hit a light pole on Wednesday afternoon.
Media reports, unconfirmed by the police, said Gabor's hairdresser was driving the car after the two had just finished a shopping trip.
Budapest-born Gabor is aged about 85 but refuses to give her year of birth. She was a Miss Hungary in 1936 and then became a Hollywood legend, often in tandem with her actress sisters Eva and Magda.
She had roles in scores of films and television series dating back to the original 1951 John Huston version of Moulin Rougeand a small part in the Orson Welles classic Touch of Evilin 1958.
She has also been married eight times. Her current husband is German Prince Frederic von Anhalt. Known for her sharp temper, Gabor gained notoriety in 1989 after she slapped a Beverly Hills policeman who pulled her over for a traffic violation.
