Algiers - President Lia mine Zeroual's decision at the weekend to step down before the end of his five-year term is expected to weaken Algeria's military-based regime and further erode domestic and international confidence in its ability to end the civil war.
Gen Zeroual said he will remain in office until presidential elections next February.
