Moscow - President Boris Yeltsin, dogged by ill health for several years, had his back examined at an elite military specialist medical centre yesterday. Persistent worries over the health of the president, who had a quintuple heart bypass in 1996, mean any visit to a clinic or hospital always raises questions about his ability to rule.

Presidential spokesman Mr Dmitry Yakushkin said by telephone that Mr Yeltsin's health was "perfectly okay".
