The family of murdered LVF leader Billy Wright has called for a full independent public inquiry into his murder in the Maze Prison in December 1997. The family was speaking after a jury in the inquest into Wright's death concluded he was shot in "a pre-planned and premeditated attack".

The jury said this attack was "carried out by three members of the INLA". They went on to say that the attackers gained access to Billy Wright through a hole cut in a section of fencing in an exercise yard of the INLA wing in H-Block 6.

In a response to a question from Mr David Wright, father of Billy Wright, on the number of persons involved in the murder, Det Supt John Shortt replied: "It is my belief that other prisoners were involved; but I have no evidence to bring charges." He said proper security measures would have prevented the murder.
