The subject of widely popular podcast series Serial will have his case considered for leave to appeal by the State of Maryland.
In the case of Adnan Syed, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals announced its intention to apply to the State for leave to appeal, with the process having been under way for five years.
In what will be Syed’s last chance of freedom, the State of Maryland must respond to the application for leave to appeal by Wednesday.
Adnan Syed was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 2000.
He has been in jail for 15 years now after prosecutors found that the football-player (then aged 18) strangled Hae Min Lee and buried her body in a public park.
The podcast detailing the events, Serial, frequently notes that there were no eye-witnesses to the crime and Syed’s attorney did not interview a wintess who placed Syed in the school library at the time of the murder.
