Man (57) in custody after three killed in Ontario

A 57-year-old man is in custody after three people were killed in Ontario, Canada on Tuesday.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) offered few details about the shooting in Wilno, a small community about 178km west of the Canadian capital of Ottawa.

They did confirm, however, that three women were killed during the shootings across the province in Wilno, Foymouny Road and Bancroft.

Police had advised local businesses to lock their doors and urged some residents to relocate while they searched for the gunman.

Sara Burchat was home alone when police advised her that there was a male suspect on the loose near her property.

Ms Burchat said her husband was trying to return to be with her but was kept away by road closures as police investigated the scene.

“The cop was on the other end of the phone saying, ‘you either hide or get out’. So I had to leave,” Ms Burchat said from the local tavern.

Arthur Shulist, owner of Wilno Building Supply, said he was instructed to secure his shop.

“We have our doors locked and when somebody comes to the door we open up for them,” he said.

The police investigation took them to a home some distance away from where they found the first body.

All lockdowns were lifted after the suspect was taken into custody.
