One of the largest carriers of US troops through Shannon Airport is to radically reduce the number of flights through the facility, it has been reported.
World Airways is believed set to cut back on its flights following the latest alleged security breaches by peace activists protesting at the US build-up to war in Iraq.
Earlier it emerged that the Peace Camp at Shannon Airport is to be dismantled.
A spokesman for the group said the decision was taken because "media attention was now focusing on the Camp rather than on the war in Iraq".
He added that they would continue monitoring US military planes refueling at Shannon and would continue lobbying against the impending conflict in the Gulf. The Peace Camp has been in situ outside Shannon since January 4th last.
Aer Rianta is due to attend the High Court tomorrow seeking an injunction banning protesters from trespassing on airport property. However, it is believed the Camp will be removed from outside the facility within two days.
Earlier the Minister for Defence Mr Smith approved the deployment of 120 armed soldiers to protect US military planes from attack by protesters. Five activists - belonging to the Catholic Worker group - appeared in court yesterday charged with criminal damage to a US plane.
