A 58-year-old woman was found last night almost 24 hours after she was kidnapped by an armed gang in Co Down.

It is believed the gang of seven armed and masked men was attempting to extort money from a member of Anne Curry's extended family who has connections to a large business.

The woman and her husband were bound and gagged in their home in Dromore, Co Down on Monday night at 9pm. The kidnappers then took the woman away in her silver SUV, which was later found burnt out on Backroad in Drumbo, near Lisburn, Co Antrim,

The woman was also discovered in a country lane in the area, which is only a few miles from her home.

Police are appealing to anybody who saw the vehicle in the area or in the Banbridge, Drumore or Greater Lisburn area.

Det Super Derek Williamson said anybody with information could contact Crimestoppers anonymously, go to any police stations, or through a member of the community who could then pass it to police.

He said the incident was "clearly an attempt to rob by an organised criminal gang"

"It has been a very harrowing experience for her and for her family," he added. Police said no cash had changed hands.
