US nominee for World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz has agreed to meet European Development Commissioner Louis Michel.
Mr Wolfowitz has been invited to Brussels to explain his views.
European governments have been guarded in public but have expressed private unease about the nomination of a man best known as the architect of the US invasion of Iraq and advocate of the unilateral use of US power to promote its global interests.
