Witnesses are being sought to the illegal dumping last week of an estimated 20 tonnes of used tyres in Co Monaghan.

The tyres were dumped on a quiet lane near Cremartin, around three kilometres from Castleblayney.

The tyres, which were discovered last week, are thought to have been dumped on Wednesday by a single lorry. A clean-up operation is under wa,y and officials from Monaghan County Council are investigating the dumping.

The cleanup will cost several thousand euro, and it is thought the tyres will be recycled by Crum Rubber, the tyre recycling facility based in Co Louth - which is the only recycling plant of its type in the country.
