WATERFORD INSTITUTE of Technology (WIT) confirmed yesterday that it has asked an accounting firm to review spending patterns at the college after controversy about the €170,000 refurbishment of the president’s office, writes .

In a statement, Donal Ormonde, chair of the institute’s governing body, said the college “has sought an independent review of the spending – on the office of president Prof Kieran Byrne – which has come to light through Freedom of Information requests. Accountancy firm Deloitte has been asked to undertake the review as a matter of immediate urgency.”

Mr Ormonde said the governing body would decide on foot of the Deloitte review if current spending procedures required new definition, scope or reporting arrangements.
