Detectives are today hunting West Brom striker Lee Hughes, who is accused of running from the scene of a road crash in which an elderly man died.

Hughes is alleged to have fled the scene following the crash close to Coventry city centre. The 27-year-old is not thought to have suffered any serious injuries, but has been urged by officers to contact his nearest police station.

Police said that his silver Mercedes CL55 coupe was in a collision with a Renault Megane as it turned into Pickford Grange Lane. A West Midlands police spokeswoman said:

"A man aged in his 60s who was a rear seat passenger in the Megane died from his injuries and his wife, who was also a passenger, is currently in Coventry and Warwickshire hospital with a broken leg.
