CYPRUS: UN weapons inspectors seeking Iraqi compliance with disarmament resolutions are to set up regional headquarters in Cyprus, the government has said.
"This will be the base from which UN inspectors will leave for Iraq in accordance with decisions of the Security Council," Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Cassoulides told reporters.
Cyprus, broadly viewed as a neutral country in the Middle East, had been approached by the UN and the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency over creating an office on the island.
The UN human rights rapporteur for Iraq, Mr Andreas Mavrommatis, is a Cypriot who lives in Nicosia.
