Wahid censured by Indonesian parliament

Indonesia's parliament has censured President Abdurrahman Wahid for acting improperly over two corruption scandals.

The 500-member parliament also referred the cases to legal authorities for further investigation, but though this does not avert the possibility of Mr Wahid facing impeachment hearings.

The overwhelming decision, reached through agreement rather than a vote, is the most serious setback to Mr Wahid's rocky 15-month rule and increases speculation he will not survive politically to serve out his term which expires in 2004.

But any formal impeachment would take months and Wahid is expected to hang on for the time being. He has denied any wrongdoing and has refused calls to resign.

Earlier today over 5,000 students converged on Indonesia's presidential palace demanding the resignation of President Wahid.

"Gus Dur resign! Gus Dur resign!" the protesters shouted, using Wahid's popular nickname.

Witnesses said the protesters were students who had earlier faced off with Wahid supporters at parliament.
