Vilnius - Centrist candidate, Mr Valdas Adamkus, early today overtook his leftwing backed rival, Mr Arturas Paulauskas, in the Lithuanian presidential poll count. Mr Adamkus was leading with 51.13 per cent against Mr Paulauskas's 48.33 per cent, on a count from 839 out of a total of 2,039 polling centres.

Mr Adamkus garnered 27.89 per cent in the first round which was won by Mr Paulauskas with 44.73 per cent. He is supported by the five candidates eliminated in the December 21st vote.
