Associated Newspapers last night criticised Mr O’Brien’s successful libel action, describing it as a sad day for those seeking to express opinions. It said it was considering an appeal.
“We are extremely disappointed with the outcome even though the jury decided that Paul Drury had expressed his opinions honestly,” solicitor Michael Kealey said. “This is a very sad day for all those who seek to voice strong opinions in our democracy.”
Mr O’Brien said: “I am delighted with, obviously, the verdict this evening. I think everybody has freedom of expression, that’s part of our democracy. I think everybody also has the right to their good name and reputation, and that’s what this case is all about.”
Reporter Charlie Bird said he was “simply the meat in the sandwich” but was glad some confusion surrounding the date of his first broadcast from Haiti was clarified.
