Vatican City - The Vatican refused to comment yesterday on US claims that Mr bin Laden, had planned to assassinate the Pope.
However, Vatican officials expressed "perplexity" over the statement by President Clinton that Mr bin Laden's network "plotted to assassinate" Pope John Paul II.
Mr Clinton levelled the accusation during his televised address on Thursday explaining the air strikes.
