US SUPREME Court chief justice John G Roberts jnr is one of the key participants at the New England Law Boston summer school at NUI Galway this week.

The event is hosted by NUI Galway’s Irish Centre for Human Rights on the theme of international and comparative human rights law. Some 56 North American law students are attending and course lecturers include members of the Irish Centre for Human Rights faculty.

The programme is credited towards American Bar Association-approved law degrees. Chief Justice Roberts, who was nominated to his position by former US president George W Bush, is speaking on the historical perspective of the US Supreme Court.

A Harvard graduate, Chief Justice Roberts served as special assistant to the attorney general of the United States, associate counsel to former president Ronald Reagan and principal deputy solicitor general.
