A US soldier was killed and two others were wounded when their patrol came under fire in northern Iraq.
A US military spokesman said insurgents attacked the patrol with guns and rocket-propelled grenades in Tal Afar, near the northern city of Mosul, at about 2 p.m. yesterday.
The death brings to 1,054 the number of U.S. troops killed in action since the start of the U.S.-led war on Iraq in March, 2003.
