Allied forces have capturedthe southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, a US military spokeswoman saidtoday.
"I can confirm the fall of Nasiriyah," Major Randi Steffy saidat Camp As-Saliyah, a forward command and control centre forthe US-British invasion of Iraq.
She provided no further details of the operation.
Nasiriyah is located northwest of the port of Basra, whichallied forces are also attempting to take in the early stages oftheir drive north to Baghdad to oust President Saddam Hussein.
