The new US ambassador to Ireland, Mr Michael Sullivan, presented his letter of credence to the President, Mrs McAleese, at a ceremony in Aras an Uachtarain yesterday.

The ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Ms Jane Metzler Sullivan, and a number of the US embassy's senior staff.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrews, and a number of his Department's senior staff also were present.

The new ambassador was escorted to and from Aras an Uachtarain by an escort of honour and was received by a guard of honour.

Mr Sullivan (58), a former governor of the state of Wyoming, succeeds Ms Jean Kennedy Smith in the post.
