Anthrax has been discovered in mail received by the US consulate in Yekaterinburg in Russia that had originated in Washington, an official said today.

Consulate officials were told today a State Department mail bag confirmed positive for anthrax, a spokesman for the American Embassy in Moscow said.

The official said the bag was sent to the consulate in the Urals region of Russia as part of a regular diplomatic delivery.

Consular officials were taking antibiotics against anthrax, in the first reported case of its kind in Russia since the September 11th attack on the United States.
