US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice today strongly condemned what she called ‘senseless violence’ in the Middle East and urged the Palestinians to do more to stop it.

"Let me express condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives today. The violence against innocent civilians is really senseless and it should not continue," Ms Rice said in an interview with NBC's

Meet the Press

television program.

Ms Rice said the United States had received new assurances recently from the Palestinian Authority that it was trying to stop the violence.

"We are waiting to see. We believe they can do more and they really do need to do more," said Rice.
