Unsafe driving scheme expanded countrywide

A Garda scheme to allow road-users report unsafe driving is being extended nationwide.

Initially established as a pilot project in the south-east, the Garda Traffic Watch programme allows road users to contact the Garda on a low-cost telephone number when they witness unsafe or erratic driving.

In particular the Garda is keen members of the public report instances of speeding, dangerous, careless or drunken driving.

Welcoming the extension of Traffic Watch, the chief executive of the National Safety Council, Mr Pat Costello, said yesterday it would allow safety-conscious road users to make a genuine contribution to road safety.

The scheme is complementary to and enhances the enforcement activity of An Garda Síochána, he said. He advised people to report unsafe driving, and try to get the make, colour and registration number of the vehicle.

"To help pinpoint the location drivers can set the journey mileometer to zero and measure the distance to the next village or town. Note the date and time and don't leave it to others to call. It could save a life," he added.
