Angola's UNITA rebel group said yesterday it had seized the city of Mbanza Congo, gateway to the oil town of Soyo, and repulsed a government offensive on a key bridge outside the northern city of Malanje.

The news came hours after the Angolan government announced it had finally abandoned a four-year-old peace accord with the mainstream UNITA rebel group, led by Mr Jonas Savimbi.
