Jakarta - An uneasy calm returned yesterday to two cities in the remote province of Irian Jaya where Indonesian troops had opened fire on Papuan pro-independence demonstrators, witnesses said. Students in the capital of Jayapura continued to bar police from entering their campus.
On the island town of Biak, unconfirmed reports said five people were killed when troops opened fire on a crowd which raised a separatist flag. Residents said at least one man was killed and 141 injured. Over 100 were arrested.
