General Santos - A powerful undersea earthquake rocked the southern Philippine island of Mindanao yesterday, driving people into the streets and causing cracks in some buildings but no casualties.

The tremor registered 7.3 on the Richter scale and was the strongest to hit the quake-prone Philippine archipelago since a 7.7 magnitude event killed more than 1,600 people in 1990, seismologists said.
