Geneva - A senior American staff member of the UN Conference on Trade and Development has been convicted of embezzling at least $500,000 from the development agency over a 10-year period, UN officials said yesterday.

Gustavo Soler-Artekona (55), a Cuban-born American, was given a suspended jail sentence of 18 months late on Wednesday by a Geneva court where he pleaded guilty to all 58 charges of fraud and forgery against the United Nations.
