New York - The UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, has asked donor countries for £683 million to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.

The money is needed to help an estimated 7.5 million Afghans survive from October to March next year amid the likely breakdown of aid programmes resulting from the September 11th air attack on the US.
