NEW YORK - The UN General Assembly began an emergency session yesterday on Israel's housing project at Har Homa in East Jerusalem. However, a request by Germany for further consultations with Bonn forced the postponement of the debate until today.
The two day session was requested by Arab states after the US used its veto twice last month to block Security Council resolutions calling on Israel to abandon the widely criticised settlement. Most speakers said the project harmed the peace process by preempting "final status" negotiations on Jerusalem and violated the Fourth Geneva Convention, barring settlements in occupied territories.
