Ugandan security forces arrested opposition leader Kizza Besigye today and fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of his supporters marching beside his car as he drove to work, a witness said.
A Reuters photographer saw four plain clothes officers bundle Mr Besigye, president Yoweri Museveni's closet rival in February elections, into a police van, sparking chaos among his supporters.
Military police patrolled the gridlocked streets after Mr Besigye, who has been spearheading protests against rising prices, was taken to an unknown location.
"All I can say is that we have him. He attracted a crowd and when it started being rowdy, we came in and decided to arrest him and create order again," said a police spokesman, Vincent Ssekate.
Mr Besigye was charged earlier this week with inciting violence and released on bail.
Veteran leader Mr Museveni defeated Mr Besigye at the ballot box for a third straight election in February and has warned his rival he will not be allowed to lead any demonstrations.
