Manila - Typhoon Zeb yesterday hit the northern Philippines with winds gusting to 295 k.p.h. (183 m.p.h.), plunging towns into darkness, ripping off rooftops and killing three people, officials said.

In Taiwan, at least one person was killed as the typhoon began to lash the island, cutting off its incoming oil supplies and closing airports.
