Leading barrister Dominic McGinn SC was one of the best paid prosecutors in the country last year, according to figures from the DPP. Mr McGinn was one of only three counsel to receive in excess of €200,000 last year when he received €202,421 for prosecuting cases in the courts.
Tom O’Connell SC was the best paid receiving, €233,206.
Their payments were part of the €12.2 million paid to counsel by the DPP last year – a drop of 7.6 per cent on the €13 million paid in 2011.
The payments represent a 20 per cent reduction on 2009 when payments by the DPP peaked at €15.2 million.
The figures show that others to feature in the top 10 include Irish Times columnist, author and political pundit, barrister Noel Whelan, who received €190,341 for prosecuting cases, while Una Ní Raifeartaigh SC received €197,228.
The figures show that senior counsel received an aggregate €3.28 million, down from the €3.3 million received in 2011, while junior counsel received €8.9 million, down from the overall €10 million received in fees in 2011.
