Two men are being questioned this morning in connection with the murder of a man in Dublin yesterday morning.

The pair, thought to be in their 30s and 40s, were arrested shortly before 11pm last night over the fatal shooting of Mark Byrne in Phibsboro. They are being held at Mountjoy Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Byrne (31), from Tallaght, was shot three times shortly after being freed from Mountjoy Prison on day release.

The dead man - who had more than 25 previous convictions for drugs, robbery, larceny and assault - had served four-and-a-half years of a five-year, seven-month sentence and was due for release in August.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that the murder was related to a dispute with a former prison inmate.

The gunman has been described as five feet, nine inches in height, with fair hair and a stocky build.

He was wearing dark clothing, a hooded top and a baseball cap. He was seen running down Berkeley Road in the direction of the city centre before turning right into Sarsfield Road and making his escape.

The shooting was the sixth gangland murder in five weeks.
