A Westmeath sportsman was one of two people killed in crashes in the last two days. Darren Price (18), Petitswood near Mullingar, died following a collision between a lorry and a car at Tyrrelspass, Co Westmeath, yesterday.
Mr Price was killed at 8.30am when the car he was driving on the Dublin-Galway Road from Tyrellspass towards Kilbeggan, collided with a lorry going in the opposite direction. The impact was described by gardaí as "to the side of the vehicle rather than head-on".
The civil engineering student at Athlone IT, who represented Ireland in international basketball, had lined out at right corner-back on the Westmeath minor football team which defeated Kilkenny last weekend.
Gardaí from Kilbeggan are anxious to talk to anyone who was driving between Tyrellspass and Kilbeggan at the time of the crash or who may have seen either the lorry or car before the collision.
An elderly woman who died when the car she was driving hit a lamppost at lunchtime on Wednesday in Churchtown, Dublin, has been named as Elizabeth Stokes (83), Ramleh Park, Milltown, Dublin.
The number of road fatalities this year has risen to 95.
Gardaí have named the man who was killed in a car crash on Tuesday at Rathaspeck, Wexford, as John O'Leary (47), Garryvadden, Blackwater, Co Wexford, and another man who died in a crash on Tuesday was named as Rory O'Donnell (23), The Curragh, Co Kildare. His motorbike collided with a car at O'Higgins Road in The Curragh.
