Two men were recovering in hospital last night after being shot in separate so-called paramilitary-style punishment attacks over the weekend. In Newry, Co Down, three masked men armed with a handgun and a baseball bat or hurley burst into a house in Barcroft Park shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday and beat the occupant before forcing him outside and shooting him through both wrists and ankles.

The second man was attacked at around 9 p.m. on Friday in the Cregagh Road area of east Belfast. He was set upon by a group of men and suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg.
