A man sustained injuries to his legs, feet and back in a paramilitary-style punishment attack in Glengormley on the outskirts of north Belfast on Thursday night.

At least five masked men kicked in the door of the 24-year-old man's home and battered him with sticks.

Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked and beaten in Ballymena, Co Antrim, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The man, who is in his 40s, was attacked as he walked home with a friend after a night out. Up to eight men kicked and punched him.

They fled when the RUC arrived on the scene. The victim sustained serious head injuries and had to be transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after receiving emergency treatment at a local hospital. His friend escaped with minor injuries.

An RUC spokesman said a motive had not yet been established for the attack which was "particularly brutal and totally unprovoked".
