At least two people were shot dead when rival Tamil political parties clashed in northern Sri Lanka today shortly after election results were announced there, officials said.
Two members of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation were shot dead and four others wounded in a clash with members of the Democratic People's Liberation Front in Vavuniya, officials said.
It was the first killing reported since elections commissioner Mr Dayananda Dissanayake began releasing results from Wednesday's parliamentary elections.
The authorities have clamped curfews in many parts of the country to prevent post-election violence.
