Two men have been arrested and are being held in Tullamore Garda Station following an armed raid on the post office in Edenderry this afternoon.
The raid took place at 2.30 p.m. when three men, two of whom were armed with handguns, held up staff at the post office and took an undisclosed sum of money. No shots were fired and the men fled the scene in a car.
Shortly afterwards gardai from Edenderry and Tullamore intercepted the raiders car in the Rochfortbridge area. The men fled the scene on foot and a short time later two were arrested and a quantity of cash recovered.
The men taken to Tullamore Garda station where they are being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
Both men are from Dublin. A search is ongoing for the third man.
