Two men have died in car accidents in Co Kerry bringing the death toll on the roads for this year to 230, 17 higher than at this stage last year.

Mr Timothy O'Donoghue (71), Kilmurray, Cordal, Castleisland, died when the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a tractor near his home at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Gardaí have impounded the car and the tractor for forensic examination.

Elsewhere, one man was killed and three others were injured in a head-on collision at Killorglin early yesterday morning.

Mr Paul Murray (38), Glencuttane, Kilgobnet, Beaufort, died at the scene following the two-car collision at Langford Street just before 2 a.m.. The three other people sustained injuries not thought to be life-threatening. Gardaí last night said an inquiry into the accident was continuing.

Body of Spanish fisherman found

The body of a Spanish fisherman who fell overboard from an Irish- registered fishing vessel off the south coast was recovered yesterday evening. The alert was raised at about 7.15 a.m. yesterday when the crewman on the Castletown was reported to have fallen overboard about 60 miles south of Galley Head.

Valentia Coast Guard sent the Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter, an Air Corps Casa maritime patrol aircraft and vessels to the area. The search on scene was co-ordinated by the Naval Service patrol ship, LE Orla. The body was recovered in the trawl nets of the Castletown at about 5.30 p.m. yesterday.

Man on murder charge remanded

A man charged with the murder of a former soldier in Sligo last week was further remanded at Sligo District Court yesterday.

Mark Sweeney (21), Finisklin Road, Sligo, charged with murdering Paul Watters at Stephen Mews, Sligo, on July 27th, was remanded in custody to August 19th. The body of Mr Watters (42), from Avondale, Sligo, was discovered beside the Stephen Street car park in the centre of Sligo town.

Post office in Cavan broken into

Gardaí in Co Cavan are hunting for a gang of thieves who broke into a post office and got away with a substantial amount of cash yesterday. The gang targeted Mount Nugent post office around 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. and entered the building at the front.

The raiders then used heavy lifting equipment to steal the safe and its cash contents. A maroon van was also stolen in the area at the same time and gardaí are appealing to witnesses to either event as they think they may be linked.

Monaghan group for Supreme Court

The Monaghan Hospital Development Committee says it will take its case for the restoration of maternity and other services to the Supreme Court. Two weeks ago the group lost a High Court action brought by four local women when the court ruled that the North Eastern Health Board had fulfilled its obligations under law by providing maternity and other services in Cavan and other hospitals in the region.

The committee's legal team is already preparing the case which could take up to a year before it is heard.

Laois man's death alcohol related

A Laois man who told a barman he had reached "the point of no return" with drink, died later in the bar, an inquest in Portlaoise heard yesterday. Coroner Mr Eugene O'Connor returned a verdict of death through respiratory aspiration associated with alcohol intoxication.

The inquest heard David Browne (36), St Martin's Flats, Main Street, Mountrath, drank several straight vodkas in the hours before his death.
